M27 Megabops is a series of monthly ceilidhs/folk dances, held every 2nd Saturday from October to April.
Each dance has a live band playing amplified traditional folk music which is irresistible to dance to, and a caller who gives instruction and tells the dancers what to do. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced feet.
The Megabops are attended by people of all ages, from accompanied children to unaccompanied elders, arriving as singles, couples, friends or groups. Various clubs come to the Megabops as a group, for example singles clubs, ramblers, young farmers and so on. People are very welcoming and helpful. We have a regular core of dancers, but there are new people at every dance. Typically we would have around 80 people on any evening. Folk dancers wear whatever is comfortable and casual, and their clothes are often colouful!
Comfortable shoes are recommended!
Dances start at 7.30pm and end around 11.15pm.
There is no bar at the venue, so people tend to bring their own refreshments. Groups often bring their own little buffet for their members to share.
It's great fun, really good exercise, very sociable and potentially addictive!
We don't have an actual membership fee, but charge entry for each event. Tickets are £9 on the door, £8 concession or reserved in advance, students £6 and children half price.
The Megabops are run by Gill Redmond and Pete Gritton.
The Megabops have been running for about 20 years and have been successful events and lots of fun.
M27 Megabops is a not-for-profit organisation.
