SELPAR International Folk Dance Group

SELPAR International Folk Dance Group are a friendly group;
men and women of all ages come along, and are always happy to welcome new members
(some dance experience is helpful but not essential).

The repertoire of the group covers a wide range of dances from all over Europe and beyond.
In recent years there has been an emphasis on the Balkan countries and Israel.

No partners are needed, as the majority of our dances are done in a circle or lines, but there are occasional couple dances.
The music is recorded (each dance has its own folk music so there is an interesting variety).

The £2.00 charge covers tea/coffee and biscuits (free entry for first-timers).

We meet at St Andrews Church, Cartland Road, Stirchley, Birmingham, West Midlands.

On 25th September 2010 several SELPAR members took part in "On Show"
performing dances from Armenia and Russia at the Royal Albert Hall

SELPAR International Folk Dance Group was founded in Birmingham in 1973 by Sybil Chapman. Maggie Kaye became leader in 1995.
For many years Selpar met at Selly Park School, from which the group's name derives.
In 2002 the group moved to Stirchley, Birmingham, where it is flourishing.
It meets mostly during school term time on Tuesday evenings to enjoy dances from many countries.

Although the group isn't specifically a demonstration group (we just like dancing socially) it has given many demonstrations over the years
(some are currently rehearsing for the CCPR 'On Show' event in The Royal Albert Hall, September 2010).

Selpar is an affiliated group of The Society For International Folk Dancing, www.sifd.org

Maggie, the current leader of the group, has been involved in folk music and dancing since childhood, but only really became involved in International Folk Dancing in the early 1990's when, after attending international dance workshops at Sidmouth Festival, she joined the Selpar dance group and developed a particular liking for dances from Russia, Israel and the Balkans.
